The IHBC is delighted to announce that the remaining resources in the Gus Astley Memorial Fund have been transferred by its trustees to the IHBC’s new CREATIVE Conservation Fund, where it will continue its to support the IHBC’s Annual Gus Astley Student Award ‘as the centrepiece of our awards programme’.

IHBC Chair David McDonald said: ‘IHBC trustees were highly impressed by the offer to transfer the remaining funds from the Gus Astley Memorial Fund to the IHBC’s new CREATIVE Conservation Fund.

‘This is both a substantial endorsement of our plans for the new fund, and a welcome underpinning of our ongoing strategy to celebrate the best in conservation learning.’

‘In response, the IHBC can commit formally to using the funds to help maintain the Gus Astley Student Award as the centrepiece of our awards programme, developing on our joint practices and partnership to date….’

…Awards have continued to grow in stature each year …

Bob Kindred MBE, on behalf of The Gus Astley Memorial Fund trustees, writes:

…Fund Trustees remarked that they were pleased that the Awards have continued to grow in stature each year among post-graduate students in perpetuation of Gus’s important professional and educational legacy. They also note however that shortly after the inception of the GASAs in 2004, it was more administratively straight-forward for the Institute to meet the costs of the prizes and attendance at the Annual School from within its internal budget and the Fund has therefor been called upon only very rarely.

The Fund received very generous financial support from the outset from the membership in memory of, and affection and esteem for Gus and currently stands at about £5,250; but as the Chair of the Fund Trustees I have been conscious for quite some time that it has been greatly underutilized.

The Trustees have concluded in the light of the Institute’s new educational initiative that now would be a good time to consider transferring the effectively dormant memorial fund to the IHBC’s new Conservation Fund.
